Going the Distance Intro the Metric System
2
Entry Task Title the next full page in your journal: UNIT 2: METRICS AND THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Paste the Learning Targets below the title
3
Going the Distance KEY QUESTION: What unit of measurement would you use to measure: 1.The distance to your house? 2.The amount of pop in your glass? 3.The weight of your cell phone? INITIAL THOUGHTS:
4
Evidence 1: T-Chart Customary UnitMetric Unit In the left column, brainstorm as many units of measure that you can
5
Evidence 1: T-Chart Customary UnitMetric Unit Meters (distance) Liters (volume) Grams (mass) In the left column, brainstorm as many units of measure that you can

7
Let’s Practice Trace your hand on the page Draw a line from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky finger. (We’ll re- measure at the end of the year) How long is it? What are the units you used?
8
Do Now What metric unit of measurement would you use to measure length?
9
Evidence: Skate Park http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk67WDvVVZ8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAVr5pA7QFQ&feature=relmfu
10
Evidence 2: Skate Park Goal: To create and design 1 structures for your tech deck using the supplies provided. With each structure, you will set a goal. For example: To roll the furthest distance, travel the highest distance, or do a certain trick. Basically, you get to be Skate Park Engineers!!!
11
Evidence 2: Skate Park As evidence, you will: 1.Sketch ONE structure 2.Using the metric system, measure the height, width, and length and include it in your sketches. 3.Record your modifications and your distances
12
Analysis Questions 1.What are the units of measurements in the metric system? 2.What went well with your skate park design? 3.What were some problems you had with your skate park designs? How did/would you fix them?
13
Analysis Q’s 1.What are the three basic metric units? 2.Why is it easier to convert in the metric system? 3.What is most difficult for you in the metric system?
14
Summary Remember: paragraph format What did you think about the metric system before this lesson? What did you learn about the metric system from this lesson? (Minimum of 3 sentences!!!) What are some further thoughts or questions you have about the metric system.
15
Reflection Do you think the whole world should use only the metric system? Why or why not?
16
Big Idea The base units for length, volume, and mass in the metric system are meters, liters, and grams.
