Overturning Stereotypes Sometimes good stories overturn stereotypes and offer characters we would not expect. Can you name any characters that may have done this? I am a Monster! Read the story. Consider the effect of the first person perspective. How do we feel about the main character? Who is he and what do we know about him. Complete a mindmap to explore your ideas.

Describes killing as a “need” helping the reader to understand his violent actions. By expressing his feelings, we understand his actions – “instinct had overtaken thought.” Reveals he is branded a “Monster hater.” They are victims of their instinct – “I couldn’t resist. ” They are well mannered – “politely replied.” They are “tired” of fighting. He is the “loneliest” of guys.

SPEECH Speech is also a great way of helping us to understand character and relationships. It also helps to move action forward. In the story the dialogue makes the vampire seem like an intelligent person with emotions. We sympathise with his predicament. How might life be hard for a monster? Speech breaks up description, varies pace, involves the reader more closely with situations and characters, it emphasises the mood of the scene or incident.

THE RULES Look at the story again. In pairs you have five minutes to identify the rules of direct speech. Rule: 1) 2) 3)

Rules Place words spoken inside the “ inverted commas. The speech must be separated by a comma, full stop, exclamation mark or question mark. Every time there is a new speaker, start a new line.

Plenary Peer Assessment: Pupils swap stories and annotate the writing. Tick every example of speech and the first person being correctly used. Pupils share best practice with the class
