LANDSCAPE ART Landscape painting is the depiction in art of landscapes – natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests.

FOREGROUND Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh The foreground of a composition is the visual plane that appears closest to the viewer.

MIDDLE-GROUND Christina’s World, Andrew Wyeth The middle-ground is the visual plane located between both the foreground and background.

BACKGROUND The Persistence of Memory, Salvador Dali The background is the plane in a composition perceived as furthest from the viewer.

Identify the background, middle ground(s), and foreground.

SCALE! As objects come forward in space, towards the viewer, they appear larger. As they recede into the background, their scale gets perceptually smaller.

4 layers on top of each other
The multiple layers (background, middle ground, and foreground) create a clear image that gives the illusion of depth and scale. 4 layers on top of each other

TODAY: Carefully plan and draw 2 landscapes with at least 6 different layers each. DO NOT HAVE MORE THAN 8 LAYERS ON YOUR DRAWING. Draw lightly to easily erase mistakes. Keep it simple, you will be redrawing your final landscape onto thicker paper. Once you have finished your drawing, bring it to Miss Muehl to be approved. You will only get one final painting paper, no exceptions.
