Hurray for Batteries! Energy – It’s Everywhere!
2
2 Where can we find batteries? In most of our favorite gadgets: Watches Flashlights MP3 Players Cell Phones Computers Electric/Hybrid Cars Many, many others… If you remove the batteries, these gadgets won’t work.
3
3 Electricity from a Battery Batteries provide electrical energy The energy comes from a chemical reaction A complete circuit is required
4
4 Energy Stored in a Battery Battery design stores energy. Metals are separated to slow flow of electrons. When connected to a device, electrons can flow.
5
5 Where’s the Chemistry? Batteries are made of two different metals. Electrolyte surrounds the metals. A chemical reaction occurs. Electrons flow from one metal to the other. In batteries, chemical energy is converted to electrical energy
6
6 Primary and Secondary Batteries Primary batteries (disposable batteries) are designed to be used once and thrown away.. Secondary batteries (rechargeable batteries) are designed to be recharged and used multiple times.
7
7 Battery Sizes - AAA to ME8Z Batteries come in all shapes and sizes. The chemical reactions power our favorite things.
8
8 Electric/Hybrid Cars All Electric cars run on batteries only. Hybrid cars use gasoline and batteries. Batteries are used to store electricity when power plants are not available. Industrial Storage
