3  Asking a question, planning the project, completing it, and communicating the outcome.  Faculty research mentor.  Individually or as part of a group.  Outside of regular coursework.  One summer, one semester, several semesters or years.  Topic can be assigned by mentor, developed in collaboration, or more independently by the student.
