2 Objectives Learn to set up a work area using an easel, drawing table, or board. Grasp the importance of proper lighting. Know which tools you need in order to draw in charcoal and in graphite pencil. Discover how to pace yourself and step back from your work in order to avoid burn-out.

5 Lighting You need strong light on your subject and on your drawing surface. Position the light on the subject so it casts strong shadows. Position the light on the drawing surface on the opposite side from the hand with which you draw.

Soft vine charcoal Compressed charcoal in square sticks Kneaded eraser Paper stumps—small, medium, and large Chamois cloth Charcoal pencils, 4B, and 6B 18" × 24" newsprint pad, rough surface Matte-finish spray fixative

8 A Successful Drawing Session
Pace yourself so you don’t run out of energy or time before your drawing is finished. Step back frequently to compare your drawing to the subject. Take a break!

9 Summary Easels are best for drawing from life.
Drawing tables or boards are good for working from photographs. Good light on your drawing is essential. Pace yourself during a drawing session.
