Principles of training The principles of training are the rules to follow when using physical activity programmes The principles of training include SPORT: – Specificity – Progression – Overload – Reversibility – Tedium avoidance

Principles of training Each person has a different reason for exercising, eg leisure, competition, professional or personal pride A person trains to improve performance When the principles of training are applied, improvements in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, fitness, strength, endurance and skill might be expected Each of the principles shows the way in which the body is affected by the degree and type of exercise undertaken

Principles of training As everyone’s fitness level differs, systematic training must take into account the performer’s individual needs Setting the demands and intensity at a personal level ensures the safety of the performer If the demands are set too low, there will be no improvement If the demands are set too high, injuries might occur Top-class athletes have a final competition in mind — the training process is systematically planned so they reach a peak of performance to coincide with that event
