CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Introduction l Boy Scouts : The Largest Boys’ Organization in the World –In more than 130 different countries –Over 2 Million Tigers, Cubs, & Webelos –Over Half a Million Cub Scout Leaders l Packs are organized to achieve the Purposes of Cub Scouting l Leaders Work together as a Team

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Chartered Organization l The community organization that owns and operates your Scouting unit l The Chartered Organization: –Furnishes meeting place for Pack meeting –Appoints a Pack Committee (3 or more) –Appoints a chartered organization representative as the liaison to its units l CSLB chapter 13, pages 143-144

Tiger Cub Groups l A BSA Program for First-grade Boys and an adult partner l Affiliated with the Pack l A school year program only - they graduate to Cub Scouts after first-grade l The Tiger Cub group coach is a: –Resource person for the Groups –Link to the Groups from the Pack

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Leadership Responsibilities l Den and Pack leading is enjoyable and rewarding, but carries responsibilities l What are the responsibilities for your position? (covered in Fast Start, and CSLB chapter 4, pages 30-40) l Leaders have responsibilities to the boys, the families, and the Pack l Leadership positions are all open to both men and women

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Teamwork l No one leader can carry out his or her responsibilities alone - it takes a team! l Teamwork in Cub Scouting means planning, leading, and evaluating the program with the help of others l All leaders must learn to work together l Successful Packs foster teamwork and cooperation among their leaders

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Benefits of Teamwork l Shared responsibility makes jobs easier l Members contribute unique ideas, bringing variety and imagination to the plan l Incorporates unique individual talents and abilities into a single, coherent plan l Allows us to sound out new ideas together l The boys learn more, because a team will usually create a better program plan

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Effective Leadership l Maintain a positive & enthusiastic attitude l Work successfully with adults –Don’t let adult conflicts interfere with the boys l Work successfully with boys –Treat them with respect as individuals –Give them a fun and adventurous program –Develop a sense of belonging and Scouting spirit... to give them pride and security

CUB SCOUT LEADER BASIC TRAINING Effective Leadership...continued l Set a good example for boys and adults –Actions always speak louder than words –see CSLB pgs 26-27 on setting the example l Continue learning and growing in leadership skills (through training) l Evaluate and improve your performance l Practice good communications
