1 Formatting an Annotated Bibliography English 3 Research Assessment 2011

2 Set Up MLA Format First See page 26 of your writing handbook for step by step instructions in formatting MLA

3 After MLA is set up On the first line of your paper, where you would usually begin your intro, you type the word thesis followed by a colon (:) Thesis: Then, type your full thesis paying attention to grammar and spelling.

4 Organize Organize your sources into alphabetical order according to the source citation. Then, set up hanging indentation going to Format > Paragraph and change “Special” to “Hanging.” This will automatically ensure hanging indents for the rest of the bibliography. Type your first source citation exactly as you copied it from galenet

5 Annotations Annotations begin immediately after the source citation. DO NOT hit enter and skip a line. Just keep typing

6 Annotations include… 2 to 4 descriptive sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the item 1 to 2 evaluative sentences to relate the item to your research topic and thesis statement a direct quotation, properly cited with page or paragraph number in parentheses

7 Direct quotations Are tied to your own words and have a parenthetical citation at the end. See page 7-8 in your research packet for more detailed instructions

8 Direct Quotation Sample One critic claims, “animals have souls and thus have rights similar to those of humans” (Hood par. 9). “Animals have souls,” one critic claims, “thus have rights similar to those of humans” (Hood par. 9). “Animals have souls and thus have rights similar to those of humans,” one critic claims (Hood par. 9). Notice how it begins or ends with your own words. The parenthetical goes at the end and is followed by a period Quotation marks go around all words that are not your own.

9 Parenthetical citations To format a citation correctly in an annotated bibliography you must… Have parenthesis Have the author’s last name or a shortened version of the title (NOT the editor) Have the paragraph or page number Place them at the end of the sentence Place a period at the end Paragraph Number: (Hood par. 9). (“Animal Rights” par. 9) Page Number: (Bengal 9).. (Animals are People 9)
