The Canadian Continence Foundation: Is a non profit, national organization with absolutely no governmental funding Has over 16,000 members, most of whom are consumers. 3,300 are health care professionals Mandate is to increase awareness of UI,its assessment, management and treatment

Physicians survey results 210 physicians surveyed.77 responded 51% urban family practice 16% rural family practice 33% other 94% said <25% practice involved UI 16% asked about UI 29% felt they received adequate training about pelvic floor dysfunction 38% felt they received adequate training about urinary incontinence

In a survey of primary health care physicians, the majority enquired about UI in 25% or fewer of their pts. (Branch LG, Walker LA et al 1993) 70% of incontinent pts do not report the problem (Umlauf MG, Goode PS et al 1996) More than 75% report the condition when ASKED by their physician (Branch LG, Walker LA et al 1994)

Conclusion Surveys carried out more than 20 years ago yield similar results regarding the prevalence, the systematic underreporting and the devastating impact of UI on the daily life of many women. Clearly there is still a long way to go in raising awareness of this common disorder. Contreras Ortiz 2004
