Describing Matter Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space

Physical Properties of Matter Definition: A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance. Ex: Water freezing and turning into ice

We use physical properties to classify matter. A change in a physical property will not change it into a different substance.

Chemical Properties of Matter Definition: A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. Ex: Iron + oxygen = rust

We can also use chemical properties to classify matter. A change in chemical properties will result in a different substance.
