The extent of the flooding in 2000
6
This shows a comparison between 1775 Lewes, and 2000 Lewes.
7
Lewes 2000 floods These were the areas affected by the floods that badly affected Lewes in 2000. The affected areas are split into 4 flood cells. These areas are divided by the river and the Phoenix causeway bridge.
9
There may have been a lot of flooding in Lewes, but there is a lot happening to stop it as well. - There are flood defences all over Lewes that you may not have noticed.
10
Have you seen this flood defence wall near Tesco? It’s hidden in bushes along half of it. This was built by the Environment Agency.
11
And there’s more to the wall than what we can see…
12
This flood gate is next to the bridge near Harveys and near the doctor’s surgery. It can be closed when there is a risk of flooding, such as an exceptionally high tide.
13
There is also more that will be happening to protect us from floods – - Some may be built by developers, with guidance from the Environment Agency.
14
The developers on this land may continue this flood wall, all along the river, to protect the proposed development.
15
There may also be a flood defence built here by a developer.
16
And… We, the Linklater RATS are also trying to reduce flooding, specifically on the Railway Land. We are working on making a bund to reduce erosion of a path.
