3 The State Opening of Parliament State Opening is the main ceremonial event of the parliamentary calendar, attracting large crowds, both in person and watching on television and the internet. The Queen's procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster is escorted by the Household Cavalry. The official known as 'Black Rod' is sent to summon the Commons.

The meaning of a carol in the present day is much different to the original one. Carol singers tell the story of the birth of Christ in song during the days leading up to Christmas. 7 Up Helly Aa is a tradition that originated in the 1880s. In the ninth century the Vikings from Norway came to the Shetlands. They came to Britain in ships and took away gold, animals and sometimes prople. Now, 1000 years later, people in the Shetlands remember the Vikings with the festival, which they call “Up-Helly_Aa”.
