Nuptial – wedding; marriage We couldn’t wait to attend the nuptials, which were to be held in the morning.

Portentous – ominous; threatening The funnel cloud in the distance was portentous.

Discreet – showing good judgment; perceptive No one at work knew they were dating because they kept their relationship discreet.

Profane – dishonor; make impure It is profane to stay seated during the Pledge of Allegiance. I could not believe it when my mother said a profanity.

Purged – got rid of; expelled After I got food poisoning, I purged my lunch.

Obscure – hide; dark The black cat’s body was obscured in the night.

Grievance – noun – injustice; complaint The mother contacted Mr. McGuire to file a grievance against the teacher because her child was failing.

Transgression – noun – wrongdoing; sin I went to church to ask for forgiveness for my transgressions because I made some big mistakes that week.

Mutiny – noun – Open rebellion against constituted authority, esp. rebellion of sailors or soldiers against superior officers The crew of the pirate ship had a mutiny against their captain because they hated him.
