Cell cycle challenge Schedule of events – Go over it on Monday together – Tuesday and Wednesday to practice – Test on Thursday and Friday How to be successful: – Listen – Take notes – Ask questions – Practice

Set-up

What does the set up look like before you begin talking?

Interphase What do I say? – The first phase of the cell cycle is interphase. – The chromatin, which are DNA, must double – If the chromatin did not double, the resulting cell would not be identical to the parent cell. – The middle is a centromere. Take the 6 pipe cleaners and twist them in the middle to form X’s.

What do I say? – The chromatin is not yet visible under the microscope. – Interphase is completed.

Prophase What do I say? – The first phase of Mitosis is Prophase. – Chromatin condense and coil. They are now called chromosomes. – Each half of a chromosome is a sister chromatid. – They are now visible under the microscope.

What do I say? – The spindles begin to form. Put small strings inside the cell

What do I say? – Nucleus breaks down. – Chromosomes attach to the spindles. – Prophase is completed. Nucleus breaks down. Spindles attach to chromosomes.

Metaphase What do I say? – The next phase is metaphase. – Chromosomes line up at the middle of the cell. – Metaphase is completed. Move chromosomes to the middle.

Anaphase What do I say? – Anaphase is next. – The chromosomes pull apart and sister chromatids migrate to opposite poles along the spindles. – Anaphase is complete Untwist the pipe cleaners. Move to poles.

Before you begin telophase, your cell should look like this.

Telophase What do I say? – Telophase is the next step. – The chromatids are at the poles. – The nucleus reforms around both masses of chromatids. Put nuclei under each set of 3 pipe cleaners.

What do I say? – Chromatids uncoil and elongate to form chromatin and are no longer visible under a microscope. Straighten your pipe cleaners to show chromatin. Put each nucleus on top of the two piles of pipe cleaners.

What do I say? – Spindle fibers break down. – Telophase is complete.

Cytokinesis What do I say? – Next is cytokinesis. – The cytoplasm cleaves or pinches in and the cell divides into 2. – Each new cell is called a daughter cell, and they are exactly alike. – In plants, the cytoplasm is divided by a cell plate.
