Earth Rock Unit Lesson 3- Let’ Get Rocks in our head and Minerals on our minds

Objectives Students will compare and describe different kinds on rocks.

Vocabulary Words mineral – any solid elements or compounds found naturally in the earth. mineralogist - a mineral scientist crystal – solids with regular shapes formed by many minerals

Our Earth Rocks and minerals are all around us. We see them in mountains, lakes and rivers, parks and even in our own backyards. Many people use the terms rocks and minerals as if they are the same things. Well, they are, sort of. Rocks are made of two or more minerals. Rocks, as Several Materials Rocks are more like cookies. They have several ingredients. A chocolate chip cookie has chocolate chips, flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. Each of these ingredients would be similar to minerals. When the ingredients are mixed and heat is applied by an oven, the mixture blends together to become something new – a cookie. A rock! Let’s be explore! We will be making observations and investigating our rocks from home. First we need to go over the 4 rock stations and expectations on behavior.

Stations Each stations will be marked with a number. Please go to the stations your teacher has assigned to you.

Rock Unit Cover Sheet Glue your cover sheet to your science journal.

Observation - Station You will need your science journal, glue, scissors, and a pencil. You will observe your rock first. Then observe three other rocks from your group. Remember to capture all the tiny details in the rock you observed. Be sure to be extra careful with your classmates rocks. If you finish early color you rock picture. Glue your observations into your science journal.
