College student vs Inmates Julio Sura

Problem Most college students have a routine throughout their day whether they know it or not. Many college students are part of a sports team, clubs, or maybe a job. This means that in order to manage their time more efficiently they need a routine.

Like most college students, the inmates at the Columbia county prison also have their own routine in order to manage their time right.

Question So what are some similarities and differences between a typical college student’s day and a prison inmates daily routine?

College student’s activity throughout the day Class Study Sports Clubs gym

Inmate activities Court yard hand ball Basketball Board games TV Exercise Law library laundry

Findings Students Most students wake up between 8 and 10 in the morning. They all ate breakfast 4 out of five students found their way to campus

On campus Class Study Meeting with teachers I found that when students had time in between classes they either went to the library to study or back to their apartment to eat lunch.

After class Gym Practice More studying Hanging out with friends

Inmates at CCP In order to better understand how an inmate at the Columbia County Prison spends his day, I observed them while I was at work.

Findings Inmates Wake up around 6:45 a.m. Doors are unlocked and they eat breakfast in the day room. Usually go back to bed after breakfast Wake up between 8 and 10 Some watch TV Some walk around the court yard for fresh air

Findings Inmates Continued… -Read -Church classes, spanish classes, GED classes etc -Noon is lockdown for an hour -They usually take a nap, read, or write letters -At 1 doors are unlocked -exsercise -use the courtyard to play sports

Findings Inmates continued.. Clean cells Do laundry Shower Have meetings with their attorneys Locked down again at 3:30 until 4:30 The rest of the time they use to watch TV and socialize

Conclusion Even though Inmates and students live in completely different environments, the typical day of an inmate is a lot like a college student’s day. Everyone has their own routine. Although they are very similar in having a routine day, the major and obvious difference is that students have the option to do more things during their free time.
