EVENTS IN THE WORLD Other EventsEvents with War 1903- U.S. Wright brothers fly first engine-powered airplane. 1913- Ford revolutionizes auto industry with assembly- line production. 1918-Allies, with U.S. help, defeat central Powers, ending WW1; Bolsheviks renamed Communist Party. 1929- U.S. Stock market crashes, initiating global depression. 1945 Would War II ends; United Nations formed. 1905-Russian soldiers fire on petitioning citizens in St. Petersburg staring brief first Russian Revolution. 1914-Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparks WW1. 1920-Hitler takes control of new National Socialist German workers (Nazi) Party; American women gain right to vote. 1928-Joseph Stalin becomes dictator of Communist Russia 1933-Hitler and Nazis seize dictatorial control of Germany. 1937-Japan Invades China. 1939-Germany invades Poland and Worlds War II begins. 1942-Nazis initiate “Final Solution” stage of murdering unwanted civilians, mostly Jews (to 1945)

Events in British Literature 1. 1913- Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (5 act romance). Eliza Doolittle is used as a science experiment, because a scientist wants to try to turn her into a Lady. Along the way she falls in love with Freddy, and questions the purpose of the science experiment. 2. 1914- Ulysses by James Joyce (controversial novel). Judge John M. Woolsey said it was “emetic” (causes vomit) and is a very dirty novel. It is about vulgarity and Celtic lyricism. There was controversy over whether it should be imported to the U.S. It is a commentary on the inner lives of men and women. 3. 1926- “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. The story of a boy who has a gift for picking the winning race horse. 4. 1932- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. A story that warns of a scientifically controlled future society. It also depicts parts of a totalitarian society. 1949- Orwell publishes 1948 It is a nightmarish vision of future totalitarian England. Totalitarian is a government where political authority has all power.
