Nature of Sin Sin depends on two things –A totally righteous God –A man who is free to make choices As a result –Man is accountable –Sin is ultimately rebellion

Consequence of Sin Desire for freedom –Overcome and enslaved –Destruction

Tremendous Challenge Power versus weakness –His power in creation (Romans 1:20) –We are like a vapor (James 4:14)

Tremendous Challenge Righteousness versus sinfulness –God’s absolute holiness (Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 John 1:5) –Man’s sinfulness (Romans 3:10, 23) –His righteousness demands justice (Romans 1:18; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9)

Tremendous Challenge Hating sin but loving the sinner –Men make no distinction –We must hate evil as God does (Proverbs 8:13; Romans 12:9)

The Key Is His Love Unique nature of His love –Greek word, agape, is love without respect to the character of the object of love –Christ dies for sinners (John 3:16; Romans 5:7, 8) –God is love (1 John 4:8)

The Key Is His Love Did not cancel His hatred of sin –Love tempered with justice (Malachi 3:6) –Jesus’ words to the rich young ruler (Mark 10:21) –May we have similar courage (Ephesians 5:11)

A Covering For Sin Propitiation in the New Testament –Meaning is “cover” –Christ is our “cover” (1 John 2;1, 2; 4:10) –Shielded from God’s wrath (Isaiah 53:4-8) –No hope outside Christ (Romans 3:25, 26; Ephesians 2:1, 2, 12)

A Covering For Sin Whose sins are covered? –Faith in God (Romans 4:6-8) –Contact with the blood (Romans 6:3, 4; Colossians 2:12) –Our Passover is Christ (John 1:29; 3:36; 8:24; Romans 2:5-9) –He sacrificed Himself (1 Corinthians 5:7)
