4 Setting the Scene Colony of St. Augustine
Founded in 1565 by a Spanish sailor Pedro Menendez de Aviles Colony- an area settled by immigrants who continue to be ruled by their parent company.

Competition among European powers for land in the Americas was violent Europeans were motivated by a desire for: wealth and power Religious freedom/growth Native Americans drawn into conflicts b/t Europeans

Spain’s Major Explorers Juan Ponce de Leon Hidalgo- Spanish gentleman Explored and named Florida in 1513

Vasco Nunez de Balboa Traveled to the Isthmus of Panama Isthmus- a narrow strip of land that joins two larger pieces of land- North and South America “Discovered” the Pacific Ocean from the American continent

9 Spanish Pattern of Conquest
Conquistadors- Spanish conquerors of the Americas. “God, gold, and glory”- goal was to spread Christianity, find gold, and win fame for their adventures Hernan Cortes- “I and my companions suffer from a disease of the heart which can be cured only by gold” Landed in current day Mexico City  joined forces with native tribes attacked the city of the Aztecs  Cortes in control

10 Controlling the Spanish Empire
Settlements in Mexico, Central America, South America, and islands on the Caribbean Economic trade made Spain wealthy Enslaved Native Americans and Africans Encomienda System- Native Americans were forced to farm, ranch, and mine for the profit of the Spanish. Spanish and Natives began to procreate Mestizo- people of mixed descent

11 The Spanish Push North pgs 39-40
Pg 39- Pick one explorer under the section Spanish Push North. Pg 40- Pick one fort and describe either a pro (positive quality) or con (negative quality) for that fort. You will be responsible for teaching your classmates about these explorers and forts. Include how they were significant to Spanish command.
