O LD I MMIGRANTS Old immigrants were people immigrating from Western and Northern Europe (Great Britain, Ireland, Germany) Why might we call these people “Old Immigrants”?

N EW I MMIGRANTS “New Immigrants” were immigrating from countries in Easter and South Europe (Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, China, Asia) Why might these people be referred to as “New Immigrants”?

W HY “N EW I MMIGRANTS ” CAME Why did the “Old Immigrants” come to the United States? Why do you think that the “New Immigrants” came to the United States? Think about the changes in the country

N EW I MMIGRANTS VS. O LD I MMIGRANTS Old Immigrants- People that spoke English and were the first groups to come to the US. New Immigrants- People that were from much different cultures than the previous people who came to the US (Language and customs)

A NGEL I SLAND Asians, primarily Chinese came through Angel Island. Angel Island included harsh questioning and a long detention while the government decided if they should let in people or not. Not anywhere as nice as Ellis Island
