Observe one of the daffodil bulbs. What is the purpose of the skin on the outside? The skin protects the bulb from damage or drying out underground. Now look at the inside. Can you guess the reason for the layers? How is it like an onion? The layers inside are leaves that give food to the bulb to grow. Do you see anything else inside the bulb? The greenish-yellowish layer Is the new plant that will grow in the spring. The new plant is protected in the layers and gets food from the layers to push through the soil in the spring.

Can you describe the daffodil life cycle?

The fifth graders want to plant daffodil bulbs in the garden outside the fifth grade classrooms. They have about 80 bulbs. How should the classes share the bulbs? How far apart should they plant them so that the entire garden will be covered with daffodils in the spring? Show your thinking as you solve this problem. Fifth Grade Daffodil Project Problem
