The Civil War Long Term Causes 1.Sectionalism – different ideas and views on economic, political, social, and cultural issues within different sections of the United States 2.Slavery - Northerners felt it was morally wrong and the South viewed it as a way of life necessary to maintain economic stability 3.Westward Expansion – as the country expanded westward so did the idea of slavery 4.States Rights – states felt that the people living in that state should have the right to decide to adopt or nullify federal laws in their state.

The Civil War Long Term Causes -Sectionalism -Slavery -Westward Expansion -States Rights Breakdown of Compromise 1.Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 - established the concept of popular sovereignty in America 2.“Bleeding Kansas” – conflict between pro slavery and anti slavery groups divided on the issue of slavery in Kansas 3.Dred Scott decision – enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act maintained the stance that slaves were not US citizens and did not have the same rights 4.John Brown’s raid – Slave revolt led by abolitionist John Brown in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia.
