5 Constitutional Amendments 1. (1791) Freedom of religion, speech, press, peaceable assembly, petition government. 2. (1791) right to bear arms/weapons rights. 3. (1791) quartering of soldiers/housing soldiers in private homes. 4. (1791) rights with search and seizure. 5. (1791) Double jeopardy; witness against yourself; just compensation for seized property. 6. (1791) right to speedy trial, to be told your charge, to know your accuser, to have a lawyer. 7. (1791) Right to trial by jury in civil case. 8. (1791) no excessive bail; no cruel and unusual punishment. 9. (1791) rights reserved to the people. 10. (1791) Implied rights to states and the people. (First 10 Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights)

6 Constitutional Amendments 11. (1798) law suites against states. 12. (1804) PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: Pres and VP elected together. 13. (1865) Slavery abolished. 14. (1868) Equal protection under the law; reverses the 3/5 compromise. 15. (1870) RIGHT TO VOTE: cannot be denied based on color or national origin. (13, 14, 15 are known as the “Civil War Amendments”) 16. (1913) Income Tax legalized. 17. (1913) Direct election of senators: by the people not state legislatures. 18. (1919) Prohibition of alcohol. 19. (1920) Woman’s Suffrage. 20. (1933) LAME DUCK bumped up inauguration date to shorten time from election to new president. 21. (1933) Repeals Prohibition #18 22. (1951) Presidential term limit: 2 terms or 10 years.

7 Constitutional Amendments 23. (1961) DC voting: Washington DC gets 3 electors in Electoral Collage. 24. (1964) Poll Tax Abolished – last obstacle for black voting rights. 25. (1967) Presidential Succession: VP to become president, Pres to appoint VP if office becomes vacant. 26. (1971) Voting Age lowered from 21 to 18. 27. (1992) Congressional Pay: pay increases do not go into effect until a new session. Look over the amendments. List your top 15 in order of importance to you, 1 being the most important. Next, write a paragraph of 7 to 10 sentences explaining your list.
