Welcome 10/06/09 Today’s Pre-Class Give me three facts about slavery in the ancient world. Today’s Agenda 1. Pre-Class & Roll 2. Recap/Collect HW 3. Jamestown 4. Problem Solving 5. Final Thoughts
2
Jamestown Jamestown – 1 st Permanent British Colony Established by joint-stock companies from Britain THEY WERE IN IT FOR THE MONEY! Hoped to grow, rice, sugar, silk etc. Expected to find gold. Envisioned partnership with the Native Americans – not so much. Native Americans attack on Day 1 A huge failure that would one day spark the slave trade in North America.
3
Is there hope for Jamestown? Early attempts at cash crops (rice, sugar, etc.) failed BUT THEN! In 1620 Jamestown developed a Tobacco plant that became popular in Europe (Smoking was fashionable) Suddenly the colony that barely survived stood a chance of surviving AND turning a profit! But there is just one problem, you need a reliable source of labor to grow tobacco.
4
History Problem Solvers! The Challenge: You and a partner have been assigned the task of identifying a suitable source of labor to grow your new profitable tobacco plants for Jamestown. Your Task: You and a partner must read through the assigned articles and identify a pro/con – advantage/disadvantage list for: 1. Native Americans as source of labor 2. Europeans/Virginian Colonizers as source of labor Based on these lists, you and a partner must make a recommendation to the governor of Virginia as to which group would make the best source of labor. *Remember if either group have more cons than pros you can’t recommend that group **Your recommendation, and your lists must be based on facts you find in the readings.
5
What you need to complete and turn in 1 pro/con list for Native Americans 1 pro/con list for Europeans/Virginia Colonizers 1 recommendation statement for each list – 1 paragraph (7-10 sentences). Lists = 20 minutes Recommendations – 5 minutes
6
Outcome?!?!? You should’ve noticed in your work that the disadvantages/cons for enlisting Native Americans and more Europeans greatly outweighed the advantages/pros. Jamestown realized that as well. By 1625 there were 23 Africans living in Jamestown. Sold to British by Portuguese
7
Final Thoughts Today’s Exit Slip But why Africa? Why do you think Jamestown turned to Africa for a source of labor. 3-5 reasons (1 line each). Tonight’s HW Read through “Virginia looks toward Africa for labor” 1. List Pros/Cons for Africa 2. Explain why this source of labor was better than the other options – Why Jamestown chose Africa!
