The southern economy depended on cash crops such as, tobacco and mainly cotton. In order to grow the crop as much as possible cheap labor was needed in order to work the land.

What else could you include? Cotton Gin Eli Whitney Location of where they came from % of people who actually owned slaves How slaves are treated

States Rights v. Federal Power 10 th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” What does this mean?? The government has a set number of powers, everything else is in the states powers. Give me examples ….

Why does is matter in the 1800’s??? Tariffs vs. the southern economy What are tariffs?? A tax on all imports and exports Why use them? It protects the products you make at home, in your country, and makes products from other countries more expensive to buy. At this time 1800’s it was one of the only ways the government could raise money.

Why should the South care? Majority of Southern Cotton was exported, so What did that do to the price?

So again why did it matter? Federal Government had only this way to raise money, by issuing tariffs, and also by doing this protected Northern factories. The South exported most of their cotton, the tariffs lowered their returns, they thought tariffs should be under state control whether accept them or not.

Which side are you on?
