A visit to the City of Integers

City of Integers Locals meet every night to dance at the city’s pavilion, located at zero. Each house’s address is determined by its distance from the Pavilion. We will visit houses of “Charges” and join the locals for nightly dances at the pavilion. We will stay at the Pavilion during our visit. The City of Integers was built along the road called, “Number Line.”

Lesson 1: Addition Dance On this Integer trip, we will participate in the customs of our hosts and the locals who dance every evening. We will gather at the city of Integers’ Pavilion. Where is the Pavilion located on the road? Show me. +5 + -2 Just like in science, one positive and one negative team up to dance and carry no charge while together. Positives can only dance with negatives. Negatives can only dance with positives.

Addition Dance (continued) The chaperones at the dance are not worried about couples who are dancing. They are in charge of : Who needs a date for the dance? Or, what is the charge of the party? Three (3) positives need a date so the charge of the dance is +3. Therefore, +5 + -2 = +3

Pavilion Dance What is the charge of each dance? Or, Who needs a date for each dance? Adding Integers Activity

Lesson 2: A drive through Integer City It is the morning after the city dance, and we are going to take a drive through the City of Integers. Start at the Pavilion, where we stayed the night. We woke up with a POSITIVE outlook, so position your car in the positive direction. + (positive) means to drive forward - (negative) means to drive backward

Whose house are you visiting?

Adding Integers When adding integers with like signs, add their absolute value (distance from zero), and input the sign When adding integers with unlike signs (a positive + a negative), find the difference between their absolute values and input the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value

Lesson 3: Subtraction Dance This lesson takes us back to the Pavilion for another dance. There are already several couples dancing. +7 - +5 The first number of the problem (+7) tells the charge of the party, or how many people need partners. Who needs a partner to dance? Or, what is the charge of the dance? Now take away the second number (+5), or five positives.

Subtraction Dance -5 - +9 +8 - +4 -3 - -2 0 - +5 +10 - -10 -2 - -3 +2 - +1 +4 - -2 Who needs a partner for each dance? Or, what is the charge of each dance? REMEMBER, you must have couples already dancing before you begin. Integer Subtraction Activity

Lesson 4: Subtraction Drive positive numbers mean to drive forward.Negative numbers means to drive backward We are going to take another stroll through the City of Integers. Remember, when adding integers, positive numbers mean to drive forward. Negative numbers means to drive backward. This is also true when subtracting integers. We always start our trip at the Pavilion, where we are staying, and have a “positive” outlook. The new idea, when subtracting integers, is that SUBTRACT means to turn around! Let’s try it! 5 - (- 3)-4 - 5-2 - (-9)

Subtraction Drive +3 - 3 +3 - (-4) +5 - (-6) -1 - -2 +4 - -8 -5 - 5 -3 - -3 7 - 2 0 - (-3) -8 - -9 -6 - 3 Whose house are you visiting?

Subtracting Integers Always change the subtraction sign to an addition sign; change the second integer to the opposite charge; then add Or, always “add the opposite”! Now you have an addition problem! LIKE SIGNS add the numbers, place the sign of both UNLIKE find the difference of the numbers, use the sign of the larger number
