DEEP OCEAN LIFE By: Jamie Levison 8E Date: May 20 th, 2015

VOCABULARY WORDS Words: Whale Shark Barracuda Sea Turtle Viper Fish Goblin Shark Flounder

WHALE SHARK The Whale Shark is a slow moving filter feeding shark. You can find it in the tropical and warm oceans, living in the open sea, with a lifespan of about 70 years. The whale shark is 41.50ft long.

VIPER FISH These slender fish have large, fang-like teeth. They appear to have scaled but they actually are covered by a thick, transparent coating. The viper fish is a deep sea predator.

SEA TURTLE There are seven species of sea turtles. The leatherbck, green sea turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, olive ridley sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle, klemps ridley sea turtle and the flatback sea turtle, these are all considered “endangered” or “critically endangered”.

FLOUNDER Flounders are a group of flatfish species found at the bottom of oceans around the world. They feed in soft muddy areas on the ocean floor and near coral reefs. As an adult. Both eyes are situated on one side of there head.

ABOUT DEEP OCEAN LIFE The deep sea or (deep layer) is the lowest layer in the ocean, existing just above the Seabed and is as deep as 1800m or more. Little or no light can be seen this deep under, most organisms and creatures rely on fallen substances from organic matter to survive. Many scientists had believed nothing could live in this part of the Ocean. Life is abundant in the deep ocean.

DEEP OCEAN LIFE IMPACT Many of these deep Sea creatures provide us with medicine, food, and material. They help us discover artifacts from the past and educate Scientists and historians to this day. Many of these creatures keep the ocean very clean and give off very good toxins for the ocean. Without these amazing creatures ability to do this the ocean would not be the way it is now. They also take a big a big part on the food chain.

CONCLUSION In the topic I chose for this project, deep ocean life, I learned that these creatures have a great impact on how the Ocean functions properly and how we as humans should consider ourselves lucky for what they provide for us. Also, I learned about many new species of fish, whales and sharks that I had never heard of. I found it fascinating. It’s amazing how they can survive so deep under only from organic matter and substances given off minerals, substances and the ocean floor (rocks). I’m now more educated and aware of what really goes on in the ocean that we don’t see. I want to learn more!
