MAKING COMPARISONS If you had to compare yourself to someone alive or dead, what are three ways you are similar and three ways you are different. If you don’t want to share don’t feel obligated but we are not going to laugh at who the person chose.

A STRONG CONSTITUTION Finish breaking down the Branches from yesterday We will look at how Georgia is similar and different with the United states based on the constitution See which class constitutions jumped out at you Let the Schoolhouse rock

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH The power is in the hands of the people The members of congress are elected by those they represent to make laws Consists of 435 representatives and 100 senators Was the first branch created but eventually the founders realized that there needed to be a central power

EXECUTIVE BRANCH We know it as the president (Obama) but also other people The president’s cabinet is included Has the power to veto a law introduced but also can be impeached The President’s cabinet includes the secretary of state, secretary of defense and secretary of education

JUDICIAL BRANCH This branch is here to interpret the Constitution Has the Supreme court A group of nine judges to make sure that the other branches are doing things that are constitutional Has the power to override a bill or law if it is deemed unconstitutional

GEORGIA GOVERNMENT BASICS The original GA constitution of 1777 was created to put the power in the hands of the legislature but now has evolved Now Georgia’s constitution looks like the National one in many ways The articles break down the rights and the rules for both the citizens and government in Georgia

GEORGIA’S CONSTITUTION These are the articles of Georgia’s constitution Article I: Bill of Rights Article II: Voting and Elections Article III: Legislative Branch Article IV: Constitutional Boards and Commissions Article V: Executive Branch Article VI: Judicial Branch Article VII: Taxation and Finance Article VIII: Education Article IX: Counties and Municipal Corporations Article X: Amendments to the Constitution Article XI: Miscellaneous Provisions

GEORGIA BILL OF RIGHTS The Bill of Rights talks about the rights and responsibilities of the citizens Talks about the freedom of religion, speech, and press Has some differences also which we will talk about too Responsibilities of Citizens are to; Volunteer when needed, Pay taxes, serve on juries, and to Vote

COMPARING GA TO US Executive : The person and his office that holds the most power in a place: Governor vs President (Nathan Deal vs Barack Obama) Legislative : The elected body of those who represent the people of a place: Georgia General Assembly vs Congress Judicial : The group appointed to make sure that the laws are constitutional: Georgia Supreme Court vs National Supreme Court

LOOK AT A BILL We will watch this School house rock finishing up with how a bill is created Next week we will look at the formation of a bill and how that process works in the legislative branch If we have time we will do a bill activity

CONSTITUTIONAL PROWESS Those who what to share their constitutions can do so The groups who acquire the most members will get something from me Make sure your group sounds appealing and people know what they are getting from it
