PUTTY

WHAT IS IT?? Putty is a free SSH client for windows. The users for this application will probably have a fair amount of computing experience.

The Good Upon opening pUTTY, immediately can connect to saved session or a non saved host Multiple instances of pUTTY can be opened at the same time allowing for multiple connections to different machines

Versus The Good Can see more specific categories quickly -> good for helping short term memories Saves a click -> Shortcuts for more experienced Users Not appropriate for all programs

The BAD (Just getting Started) Open?? Bad terminology, perhaps “log in” or “connect” Cancel here means Quit No built in documentation No other languages Can’t resize window

The BAD (Continued…) What is this?? No label Loads saved settings, does not actually connect All three always Active (never grayed) -you can save sessions with no Host Name Where will this take me???

The BAD (oh yes, there’s more….) ???????? Once the open button is pushed there is no turning back…. Even if the Host Name does not exist If you do successfully connect. Once you close the terminal window putty is gone. You will have to re-open the application.

The Summary Good for experienced users that have a simple task that they need to get done quickly and often Bad for users that are inexperienced with the workings of SSH’ing or for users that have a multitude of different connections they need to keep track of.
