in the lady’s bedroom in her uncle’s bedroom what Mr. Holmes saw the hole higher up in the wall between two rooms the red bell rope fastened to a nail next to the hole in the wall a narrow bed; a bowl of milk on the floor; a heavy metal chest; an armchair; a table; two pipes; some tobacco; a box of matches; a gun; a thin piece of rope with the end tied in a circle; a hard chair

strange points Why? the hole between two rooms the red bell rope a bowl of milk on the floor a heavy metal chest a gun a thin piece of rope a hard chair (why examine it?) A builder would make a hole in an outside wall to ventilate the room, instead of in the wall between two rooms. The bell rope should be fastened to the wire to call a servant in the kitchen, but not fastened to a nail next to the hole in the wall. A bowl of milk on the floor may be used to keep pets. It may be used to keep something secret or dangerous. It may be used to kill somebody as well as protecting oneself. The rope may be connected to the one in the lady’s room. To check if there were footprints on it. If yes, her uncle may keep a close watch on the lady through the hole in the wall.

How do you suppose the story will end? Please make up any possible end for the story.

Fast reading How did the story end, actually? The young lady’s uncle was bitten to death by the snake.

Facts and reasons 1. The young lady called “Good night” to her uncle, opened and shut her bedroom door, without entering. 2.A pale light came through the hole in the wall, and later they heard a long low whistle. 3.Holmes struck a match and hit the bell rope again and again with his stick. 4.Her uncle attempted to kill his niece with a brown snake. 5.The young lady was lucky that night.

Let’s share with each other the wonderful story. Suppose you were one of the characters in the story, please give us a vivid description of it.

1 Suppose you are the young lady. My father died quite a few years ago, and my mother died just three months ago. They left me a big house and lots of money. My uncle, the only relative of mine, came back from India not long ago. He did not seem to be kind to me, and sometimes we even quarreled… 2 Suppose you are Dr Watson. One day a young lady paid a visit to my friend Sherlock Holmes. She said that she needed his help with her personal problem. She told Sherlock that her parents were dead and…. 3 Suppose you are Sherlock Holmes, the great detective. One day I was sitting at my desk and reading the newspaper when the doorbell rang. A young lady came in. She looked a bit worried. I asked her what I could do for her. Then she began to tell me her story… 4 Suppose you are the young lady’s uncle. I had been living in India long before I came to live with my niece. She was a wealthy lady because she had just got a large amount of money from her parents. So…

Clever people may be victims of their own cleverness. A wise man can be ruined by his own wisdom.
