1
Density is the amount of mass in a specific volume cm 3
2
(1) Formula (2) Substitute (3) Solve A wood block has the mass of 100 g and the volume of 20 ml. What is the blocks’ density. D = 5 g/ml D = m / v D = 100 g / 20 ml
3
Practice Rearranging The Density Equation A Chili Pepper has a density of 50 g/cm 3 and a volume of 10 cm 3. Find the mass of the chili pepper D = M V M = V x D So Chili Mass = 10cm 3 x 50g/cm 3 Mass = 500g
4
Water has a density of 1 g/ml If an object’s Density is more than 1 it will sink If an object’s Density is less than 1 it will float
5
Buoyant Force: An upward force that fluids exert on all matter. Caused by different fluid pressures. Buoyant force opposes gravitational force Gravity Force Buoyant Force
6
Weight vs. Density If an object weighs more than its density it will sink. If an object weighs less than its density it will float.
7
The buoyant force on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced (pushed aside) by the object. Notice! Notice!! New Weight
