What is an electrochemical cell? An electrochemical cell transforms… All cells have…(3 parts) A dry cell has… but a wet cell has… If you connect…. You will create a… Explain how we created cells and batteries during class to demonstrate this process.

An electrochemical cell is a device that transforms potential chemical energy into kinetic electrical energy. Electrochemical cells are made of two electrodes, the positive electrode (cathode) and the negative electrode (anode), and an electrolyte. Dry cells have an electrolyte paste and wet cells have a liquid electrolyte. If you were to connect two or more cells together it would create a battery. In class we made a penny cell using pennies, aluminum foil, and saltwater. The penny cell made only a little electric current by itself, but could be stacked up with other people’s cells to become a battery which created more electricity. We also made a wet cell with copper, zinc, and vinegar water. Finally, we used fruit and vegetables as our electrolyte and created several cells. Hooking many of these cells together gave us enough electric current to light a small red light (diode).

Today’s Agenda Warm-Up: Key Question 16 – What is an Electrochemical Cell? Classwork: –Electromagnet Textbook Assignment –Electromagnet Variables (Website) Homework: –Step 4, Key Questions 11-15, Quiz 3 DUE FRIDAY!!! Conclusion: –What variables can be changed to strengthen an electromagnet?

Student Objective Saturday, November 21, 2015 Students will be able to… Explain changes you can make to increase the strength of an electromagnet.

Name: ________________ Class: ________________ Directions: Use pages 38-40 of the electricity and magnetism textbook to answer the following questions. 1.What is a solenoid? 2.What can be placed inside a solenoid to strengthen the magnetic field? 3.What is an electromagnet? 4.What are the 4 ways that you can increase the strength of an electromagnet?

Name: ________________ Class: ________________ 1.What is a solenoid? 2.What can be placed inside a solenoid to strengthen the magnetic field? 3.What is an electromagnet? 4.What are the 4 ways that you can increase the strength of an electromagnet? A solenoid is a current carrying coil of wires which produces a magnetic field. Introducing a ferromagnetic (iron) material inside a solenoid will strengthen the magnetic field created when electric current is flowing. An electromagnet is a solenoid with a ferromagnetic core. It is a magnet created by electric current which you can change the strength of and turn on and off. There are many ways to increase the strength of an electromagnet. You can increase voltage, add more coils, make the coils tighter and neater, use thicker gauge wire, add a stronger ferromagnetic material for the core, and change the type of conducting wire. Directions: Use pages 38-40 of the electricity and magnetism textbook to answer the following questions.

Name: ________________ Class: ________________ 1.What is a solenoid? 2.What can be placed inside a solenoid to strengthen the magnetic field? 3.What is an electromagnet? 4.What are the 4 ways that you can increase the strength of an electromagnet? Current carrying coil of wires. Ferromagnetic (iron) material. Solenoid with ferromagnetic core. Can be turned on/off and made stronger. More loops Tighter loops More voltage Stronger/more ferromagnetic core Directions: Use pages 38-40 of the electricity and magnetism textbook to answer the following questions.

Name: ______________________ Date: _______________________ Class: ______________________ Use the following website to fill in the table and answer the questions about electromagnets. http://www.fossweb.com/modules3-6/MagnetismandElectricity/activities/electromagnet.html Power Supply (AC or DC) Volts (10, 50, or 100) Wire Gauge (Thick, Med, or Thin) Wire Type (Al, Cu, or String) # of Winds (0 – 100) Iron Filings Collected 3 10 21 60 75 1.According to your website exploration, what are 3 things you can do in order to make an electromagnet stronger? 2.According to your website exploration, what are 2 different things you can do in order to decrease the strength of an electromagnet? http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/electromagnets/ Now go to the following website and use your knowledge to pick up the correct number of paper clips using an electromagnet. DO NOT USE THE HINT OPTION! 3.According to the website, each battery will pick up _____ clips and each set of 10 coils will pick up _____ clips.

HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 1.Project Step 4 2.Key Questions 11-15 3.Quiz 3 – Electricity & Magnetism Always copy daily homework into your agenda.

Which of the following things would NOT result in a stronger electromagnet? ??? A.Increasing the loops (coils) from 20 to 40. B.Using thinner copper wire. C.Changing to a stronger ferromagnetic (iron) core. D.Changing from a 1.5 Volt energy source to a 9 Volt energy source.
