2  Current policy prohibits recovering or transplanting an organ from a deceased donor with HIV  The HIV Organ Policy Equity Act - November 21, 2013 The Problem

3  To concurrently amend OPTN policies to allow members to participate in the research study Goal of the Proposal

4  OPOs accurately document HIV test results for every deceased donor  Before recovering and transplanting organs infected with HIV:  Transplant hospital must confirm the potential recipient is known to be HIV infected prior to transplant  Transplant hospital must participate in an institutional review board approved research protocol that meets the requirements in the Final Rule How the Proposal will Achieve its Goal

5  This proposal is a first step to amend OPTN policies to allow members to participate in the research study  A second proposal will be distributed for public comment in January 2015 with additional policy changes and requirements Additional Background
