What I learned from your Act 1 short answer…

Here are some general things you need to know: racial and racist are not synonymous.

Racial simply means belonging to a race. We are all racial.

In contrast, racist means you are prejudice against one or more races.

Use the words correctly in the sentence. 1. The police department has been accused of _______________ profiling. They only stop cars driven by one race. 2. I wish all the ________________ people would disappear from this earth. Their bigotry is ruining our world. 3. Many people feel Walt Disney was a very ______________ person. He allegedly preferred one race of people. 4. Hitler was guilty of hating all Jewish people. He wanted a ____________ cleansing in Europe.

Many of you are very dependent on 1 st person when answering questions.

Most of these questions do not need 1 st person answers. You can eliminate this from about 99% of your answers very easily.

I read this sentence at least 25 times. I can infer from Juror 1’s words and actions that he is a racist.

It is so easy to fix. I can infer from Juror 1’s words and actions that he is a racist. to It is easy to infer from Juror 1’s words and actions that he is a racist. The second one is a much better response.

Also, many of you found pretty good quotes for the blue section of your response – but you lacked a transition that would have made the quote effective.

Read the following response. Highlight the ACE like we practiced. I can infer that Juror #10 is mean, doesn’t care of anyone but himself, and is very antagonistic. His hateful personality is made official when he says, “We don’t owe the kid a thing” and “you are not going to tell us that we are supposed to believe him, knowing what he is. I have lived among ‘em my whole life. You can’t believe a word they say.” He is basically stating that just because they are poor, they are liars and delinquents. Juror #10 believes he is superior and treats everyone who is below him like trash.

Juror #10 believes he is superior and treats everyone who is below him like trash.

Here is another one. It also has a good transition. Highlight the ACE. Juror #10 is a racist and cynical man as portrayed by his words and actions in from Act I. He despises the slum kids saying “I don’t want any part of them,” due to their race. His blatant hatred for the other races impedes his ability to come to a fair and just verdict because the kid being tried is not white. He cannot separate his racist personality from the case, even with a life hanging in the balance.

Read the following response. Highlight the ACE like we practiced. Now this one needs our help. I have left blanks where we need to transition the blue section. Highlight ACE and then add a transition to make this a stronger response.

Read the following response. Highlight the ACE like we practiced. From juror #10’s actions I can infer that he is a racist. In Act 1 he says that “you can’t believe them can you?” ________________________________ _______________________________. This implies that he sees the child as different and insignificant by using the term “them.” Juror #10 ultimately implies that because the boy of a certain race or is a certain color, he cannot be trusted.

Read the following response. Highlight the ACE like we practiced. From juror #10’s actions I can infer that he is a racist. In Act 1 he says that “you can’t believe them can you?” when speaking about the boy on trial for murder. This implies that he sees the child as different and insignificant by using the term “them.” Juror #10 ultimately implies that because the boy of a certain race or is a certain color, he cannot be trusted.

And lastly, your Answer, Cite, & Explain are a team. When you put it all together it should flow. If you have great C and great E, but lousy A, you will not be successful in communicating your point. Here is a great response that all works together. It is not perfect. I really think the answer is kind of weak – but as a whole, it is successful. Read the following response. Highlight the ACE.

Before you turn in your Act 2 and 3 short answer  Make sure you do not have these words in your first sentence. I, we, you, us.  If you used racist or racial – please make sure it is used correctly.  Look at your blue. Underline all the words you used to transition your quote. If you do not have any words underlined, you did not do it correctly! After you are finished with the highlighting and the checklist above, read it one more time. Is it effective communicating your idea? Do you thing C and E support A. Do you have enough pink?
