What works? Integrated Language and Content Instruction Lessons and units that support concept development, practice and application Building background knowledge by providing concrete experiences Instruction that incorporates students’ cultures and language TEA presentation accessed 10/07/2008 http://www.tea.state.tx.us/curriculum/biling/TitleIIIMgmtInstitute050107.pdf

Why bilingual/Spanish text? Recent Findings… L1 word reading skills transfer to L2, but children must have first language literacy in the skill for the transfer to take place: oral proficiency in the first language is not sufficient. Vocabulary is an extremely important predictor of reading comprehension. TEA presentation accessed 10/07/2008 http://www.tea.state.tx.us/curriculum/biling/TitleIIIMgmtInstitute050107.pdf [August, Carlo, Calderon and Proctor. (Spring 2005) The International Dyslexia Assoc. Quarterly]. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/curriculum/biling/TitleIIIMgmtInstitute050107.pdf

Research on Effective Instruction for Language Learners Limited word recognition skills and fluency impede comprehension. Limited vocabulary impedes comprehension. Structural differences between languages can mislead ELLs. Culturally unfamiliar text is more difficult to comprehend. Developing Literacy in Second Language Learners: Report of the National Literacy Panel on Language-Minority Children and Youth. August and Shanahan (eds.) (2006).

Table adapted from Thomas and Collier (1997) comparing the long-term academic achievement of students in the different bilingual education program models

Purpose of the Tejas Star Book Award To promote reading For readers to discover the cognitive and economic benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism in a global community

“Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca” por José Martí Cultivo una rosa blanca en julio como enero para el amigo sincero que me da su mano franca. Y para el cruel que me arranca el corazón con que vivo, cardo ni ortiga cultivo; cultivo una rosa blanca.

DANÇA por Eugénio de Andrade Eram a delicadeza, a graça. Mas também a fúria da gataria ardendo nos telhados. São jovens e dançam – formosos como as dunas, os trigos, os cavalos. Creative Commons photos downloaded from Flickr 09/16/2008.
