2. The Soldier of the Lord
We read of Joshua’s commissioning in this first chapter.
Moses was dead, and Joshua was called to ‘arise and go’.
God was calling him to lead the nation of Israel into the Promised Land and possess it.

3. The Soldier of the Lord
In like manner we are to possess all that God has for us as believers.
Let’s begin our study and look at chapter one.

4. The Soldier of the Lord
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide:
2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them-to the Israelites. (Joshua 1:1-2, NIV)

5. The Soldier of the Lord
3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.
4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates-all the Hittite country-to the Great Sea on the west. (Joshua 1:3-4, NIV)

6. The Soldier of the Lord
5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Joshua 1:5, NIV)

7. The Soldier of the Lord The Duty of Courage and Strength.
Joshua is Commissioned for a Test of Faith (1:1-5).
First Word of Encouragement - “Be strong…” (1:6).

6 “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. (Joshua 1:6, NIV)
Strength is expected, not ours…but His!

9. The Soldier of the Lord
7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. (2 Tim 1:7, NIV)
“... as I was with Moses, so I will be with you” (1:5b).

10. The Soldier of the Lord
Second Word of Encouragement - ‘Be courageous…’ (1:6)
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. (Psa 27:14, NIV)

11. The Soldier of the Lord The Duty of Obedience to the Word (1:7-8).
7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7, NIV)

12. The Soldier of the Lord
8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8, NIV)

13. The Soldier of the Lord God gave Joshua the recipe for success.
Joshua was prepared to command by first obeying.

14. The Soldier of the Lord
God’s Word is also our law of conduct and action.

15. The Soldier of the Lord
Joshua was prepared to Command by his daily meditation (1:8)
Mere intellectual acquaintance to the Word of God is not enough; it must be applied in the life.

16. The Soldier of the Lord
The best obedience comes from the best knowledge and best knowledge comes from meditation and meditation brings wisdom.

17. The Soldier of the Lord The Assurance of Victory (1:8-9)
8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8, NIV)

18. The Soldier of the Lord
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Josh 1:9, NIV)

19. The Soldier of the Lord
To be saturated with the Word of God is to be assured of victory.
Joshua was very conscious of his own inadequacy and his weakness.

20. The Soldier of the Lord God must humble us, break us, and empty us.
Joshua was about to lead a nation that was not used to warfare into battle.

21. The Soldier of the Lord
We can still count on the Lord to do everything He promised Joshua He would do!
He still gives victory over all our enemies (1John 5:4b-5).
He is still ever-present and all powerful (Matt 28:18-20).
He is still faithful (Heb 13:5b)

22. The Soldier of the Lord He still keeps His promises (Rom 4:21).
He still gives absolute victory
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:57)

23. The Soldier of the Lord Conclusion What are we going to do?
Just one thing: Trust God!
