The Student Activity These materials are © 2012 April Grava, Flinders University, all rights reserved. 6 Next 12345 For this activity, you will be required to research the artist Banksy and how he has changed the idea of graffiti and vandalism to street art. You will need to research what street art is and how it differs from graffiti. You are required to analyse one of his works and give a brief statement as to why you believe it to be street art/graffiti. Then you can create your own Banksy style stencil from one of your personal images. This link will take you to a YouTube news story on graffiti and vandalism

The Assessment Activity These materials are © 2012 April Grava, Flinders University, all rights reserved. 6 Next 12345 For this assessment, you are required to write an 700 word essay on Banksy and how his art has changed the public’s opinion on the acceptance of street art. In your essay you should include information on: Banksy and his art What street art is How Banksy’s work is reflected in society The difference between graffiti, vandalism, and street art Then form your own opinion on whether you think street art is a form of art or vandalism You will need to back up your opinion with information from at least three credible sources (not wikipedia).

Teacher Support Materials These materials are © 2012 April Grava, Flinders University, all rights reserved. 612345 Curriculum standards (SACSA) 5.1 Uses imaginative thought, and an analysis of arts practice, styles, forms and genre to create/re-create arts wrks within each arts form that explore social, cultural and/or environmental issues 5.4 Draws from critical analysis, personal research and reviews to interpret and make meaning from arts works across each arts form, ad uses extensively specialised arts language to provide informed opinion about these works 5.5 Understands and explains the powerful influence that political, social, technological and economic factors have on the purposes and function of arts works made in contemporary times 5.6 Conducts independent research, critically analyses and compares and contrast arts works from different cultural settings and across arts forms, and communicates understanding in written and/or practical form Slam Dunk objectives This slam dunk is aimed at year 10 students and is to be used as an investigative study on the artist Banksy. It can be used to welcome students to the notion of street art - a more unconventional style of art that they will not be very familiar with. This lesson defines and raises discussion about street art and its most beloved producer, Banksy. Students will be required to analyse his work, ad form their own opinion on whether or not his work is art or vandalism. Students will be graded on their understanding and justification of street art.
