Notes: Monday December 17, 2012 Topic: Types of Reactions EQ: How can we predict what the products of a reaction are if we know the reactants and the type of reaction?

Synthesis Reactions When reactants combine to make one product A + B  AB Examples – 2Na + Cl  2NaCl – 8 Fe + S 8  8 FeS – C + O 2 → CO 2

Decomposition Substances are broken apart AB  A + B Examples – CaCO 3 → CaO + CO 2 – 2H 2 O → 2H 2 + O 2 – H 2 SO 4 → H 2 O + SO 3

Combustion An oxidation reaction of an organic compound. Oxygen is always involved. Examples – CH 4 + 2O 2 → CO 2 + 2H 2 O – 2C 4 H 10 + 13O 2 → 8CO 2 + 10H 2 O The types of carbon released depends on how much oxygen there is in the reaction. If there is more oxygen in the reaction CO 2 is released, if less just C or CO.

Single-Displacement A reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound. AX + B  BX + A Examples – Cu + 2AgNO 3 → 2Ag + Cu(NO 3 ) 2 – Fe + Cu(NO 3 ) 2 → Fe(NO 3 ) 2 + Cu

Double-Displacement A reaction where there is an exchange of atoms between two compounds. AX + BY  AY + BX Examples: – Na 2 SO 4 + CaCl 2 ----> NaCl + CaSO 4 – Pb(NO 3 ) 2 + KI ----> PbI 2 + KNO 3
