Chapter 6 Lesson 2

What is Wind? Air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Latitude – measure of how far north or south a place is from the equator Trade Winds – winds that blow between 30 degrees N and 30 degrees S latitude Global Wind – blows steadily over long distances in a predictable direction

Coriolis Effect – describes the change in the direction of something on or above the Earth’s surface due to the Earth’s rotation. Dense – packed with particles – Warm air is less dense than cold air – this is why cold air sinks and warm air rises

Local Winds Sea Breeze – movement of air from water to the land (day) Land Breeze – movement of air from the land to the water (night) Valley Breeze – cool air moves up out of the valley to replace the rising warm air (morning) Mountain Breeze – warm air rises out of the valley and cool air from the mountain flows down into the valley (evening)

Drew Brees New Orleans Saints Quarterback

Measuring Wind Weather Vane – instrument that shows the way the wind is blowing Anemometer – instrument that measures the speed of the wind
