1
wind – air that moves horizontally
2
convection cell – a pattern of rising and falling air, sinking air, and winds caused by unequal heating and cooling of the air
5
sea breeze – a wind that blows from the sea toward the land
7
land breeze – a wind that blows from the land toward the sea
8
sea breezes vs. land breezes
9
Coriolis effect – no matter which way the wind blows, it will always pull toward the right in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in southern hemisphere.
11
isobar – a line on a map connecting places with equal air pressure
12
westerlies – Winds that curve to the west as a result of the Coriolis Effect and high pressure north and south of the equator.
14
easterlies – Winds that curve to the east as a result of the Coriolis Effect.
15
air mass – A large region of the atmosphere in which the air has similar properties.
16
front – The boundary where two different air masses meet (they don’t mix.)
