2 SE Asia Portuguese- eventually leave –Violence, attempted to have monopoly over trade, disrupted peaceful interactions Dutch- –Meshed in a bit better –Controlled certain products. –Went to islands and uprooted stuff they didn’t want growing there (ie competition) –Dutch East India Company Philippines- Spain and then eventually the US (after Spanish American War) Vietnam (Indochina)- French- controlled RICE

3 S Asia India… BRITISH!! Cotton, tea, opium, etc “Jewel in the Crown” British east india company had indirect control until a HUGE MEGA EVENT TOOK PLACE –Relied on Sepoys (native soldiers)… unhappy about animal fat sealing cartridges –SEPOY MUTINY –Led to Direct British control of India (The Raj)

BEFORE Industrial Rev limited coast (especially the West) 1500-1700’s slave trade Couldn’t travel on the rivers Disease (malaria) Worked together, African rulers had the upperhand – Gunpowder kingdoms (getting weapons in xchange for slaves)- cycle of warfare ended up being bad for Africa Portuguese had factories established for trade along the coast

6 Need raw materials, not so much slaves Technology now to invade the interior (steamships, maxim guns, quinine pills (malaria)) Increasing racist outlook “White Man’s Burden” Berlin Conference –Divide up Africa (or at least set up rules for how to divide up the continent) –White dude only event Cecil Rhodes- British statesman who pushed for Imperialism of Africa 1 st colonized- Congo (Belgians) Mistreatment of African ppl Resistance to the Europeans- Zulus put up a good fight

7 Boers- South Africa (Dutch farmers)- resist British rule (b/c saw themselves as African, Brits outlawed slavery) Boer War (guerilla warfare, Boers in concentration camps) Settler vs non-settler colonies Didn’t focus on western education Play on tribal conflicts/ ethnic issues No self-government allowed French focused on assimilation and paternalism (adopt French culture, French took care of them, given French citizenship, but were not involved in the gov’t so much)

8 Economic- Latin America Monroe Doctrine AND the naval support of GB prevent recolonizing GB = LA’s main trading partner –Coffee, Brazil Vulnerable to global markets Stuck just selling raw materials and stuff, doesn’t really develop industry Primary products (just like Africa) 20 th c- US becomes dominate force –Banana Republics, United Fruit co control political interests in CA 90% of banana trade
