Ch. 1 1. What is civics? The study of the rights and duties of citizens 2. The American population is diverse. Explain? Different ethnic, racial, backgrounds 3. How does one become a U.S. citizen? Through the naturalization process or birth 4. Compare and contrast illegal and legal aliens? 12 million illegal aliens live in the USA illegally. Constitution of the United States Write the Preamble: We the People to the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. What is the Elastic Clause? It gives Congress the right to make all laws “necessary and proper” allows Congress to stretch its powers.

Ch. 5 1. What is the difference between duties and responsibilities? Duties are things that we are required to do. Responsibilities are things we should do, obligations that we fulfill voluntarily. 2. List 2 responsibilities… Be informed and vote, respect different opinions and ways of life 3. List 2 duties… Obey the law, pay taxes 4. Governments are bureaucracies– what does this mean? They are complex systems with many departments, many rules, and many people in the chain of command. 5. How do Americans volunteer? List examples… Cleaning up a highway, helping needy families, animal shelter, food drives.

Shift in population from North Eastern States to growing population in the South and Western states 3. How does Congress remove an official from office? House impeaches officials of misconduct in office, the Senate holds a trial to decide guilt or innocence 2/3 vote is needed to convict and remove a person from office 4. List qualifications for Senators & Representatives… House-25 years old, citizen for at least 7 years Senate-30 years old, citizen for at least 9 years 5. How does a bill become a law?
