Note that in 10 th grade these students are taking Life Science, a class offered for students who are not able to enroll in other more advanced science classes needed for college. 6

7. Biology – Grade 9 though 11 Thirty-five percent of high school students attempt biology, a required lab science class for college attendance. Fifty-seven percent do not achieve proficiency. 7

8. Chemistry – Grades 9 through 11 Only 12 % of students in Monterey County attempt Chemistry. Sixty-six percent do not achieve proficiency. 8
