About Me: – New position as Finance Manager for centralized cores – Unfamiliar with core management – New LeadMe Mentee 2013-2014 – Great opportunity for me to practice the principles I learned in the LeadMe Program on a daily basis in my new position

Presentation Objectives At the end of this presentation, you will be able to: – learn five key LeadMe Leadership principles – see how I implemented the five principles into my work

What is a core? aka: shared facility, shared resource, or scientific recharge -Scientific group that offers specialized services which are paid for by researchers -cores exists because there is a need for the core’s expertise or instrumentation -like a mini-business

TIPS for How To Successfully Manage a Core Utilizing the LeadMe Leadership Principles

1. Tour the core. Get to know your facility and the entire team. LeadME Principle: Model the Way.

2. Communicate regularly. Set the tone for engagement early on, establish recurring monthly or quarterly meetings, remind each other about roles and responsibilities and expectations. LeadME Principle: Inspire a Shared Vision.

3. Monitor your monthly revenue versus expenses. Be proactive and revise your service rates if necessary, develop simple rate calculations, create templates as you go. LeadME Principle: Challenge the Process

4. Shares resources with your team and with colleagues. Share files via Dropbox, Google doc, shared drive. Share development and learning opportunities with each other. LeadMe Principle: Enable Others to Act

5. Develop strong working relationships across your organization. UCSF: RRP, Budget Office, Sponsored Research Office, Accounting, Conflict of Interest, Cancer Center, CTSI (initiate brown bag meeting, recurring focus group meeting). LeadMe Principle: Encourage the Heart

Summary Why should I be interested in cores? -Might be an emerging area as a result of limited research funding, managing a core is like managing a small business Why should I apply for the LeadMe Program? -Great opportunity to focus on your professional development while working with motivated mentors and mentees in a safe, supportive environment What did I learn from this experience? Leadership is non-stop, ongoing and ever evolving. What is my future commitment to NCURA? Volunteer to become a MINT 2015-2016
