Lesson Goal: Analyze the colonies of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, using a chart as a graphic organizer. Outcomes: Be able to... 1.Identify the reasons why colonists left England to establish a colony in Massachusetts. 2.Explain why some settlers left Massachusetts and relocated to Connecticut and Rhode Island. 3.Identify who, in each of the three colonies, was the most influential leader and cite what each of those leading individuals did to help their society. 4.Describe in detail how each of the three colonies were governed. 5.Identify the type of economy each colony had, citing their resources. 6.Indicate each colony’s “place” in the world; that is, what were the unique elements of each?
3
Starter #1 Working in teams with your desk partner(s), each student is to fill out the chart on today’s handout. For each of the three New England colonies we are studying (MA, CT, and RI), answer the five questions listed on your chart.
4
Starter #2 Today’s second activity is an individual one. On a sheet of notebook paper, you will create a complete heading (Name, class, date, assignment), then do the following: Follow the guidelines on the Directions sheet handout for writing a two paragraph comparison-contrast response. Note how each colony was established, how it was governed, and what its economy was like (the resources, goods, and/or services that drove its economy). In the first paragraph, describe the ways the three colonies are alike. In the second paragraph, cite ways in which the three colonies differ. Note that it would be futile (extremely difficult) to try to complete this without first doing a good job on your chart. When you finish the comparison/contrast paragraphs, place them the side box. If you fail to fill out headings, your grade is “0.”

Starter #3 Our highest priority today is to do an excellent job with completing your graphic organizer, a chart on the NE Colonies. Before you start working with your desk partners on that, let’s look at the directions all together.

Paragraph Write two detailed paragraphs that explain the similarities and differences between these three New England Colonies. How were the colonies alike in many ways and why? In what ways were they different and why? Include how the colonies were organized, what the economy of each one was like in terms of their resources (how they used their resources), and what types of government were set up in each colony.
