Chairperson’s Evaluation of Faculty Training Session April 11, 2006 (The YSU/YSU-OEA Agreement is the definitive source on the chairperson’s evaluation of faculty. See Article 11.)

Faculty Evaluation Purpose: Article 11 “The primary purpose is to help faculty to improve their professional performance. “ Chair is a Leader and Teacher “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” —John F. Kennedy

Secondary Purpose of Faculty Evaluation Article 11: A secondary purpose is to provide those individuals responsible for making career decisions with information regarding faculty performance. Chair is an Administrator “The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.” —Henry Kissinger

Article 11.7 Chairperson’s Evaluation of Faculty The Administration shall provide periodic formal training for chairs and new chairs The Administration notifies Association of dates of training and chairperson attendance. Evaluation Cycle Non-tenured faculty every year Tenured faculty but not full professors every other year Tenured full Professors every four years unless a tenured full professor receives an evaluation of “weak” or “very weak” in teaching, scholarship, or University service. (See Agreement.)

Evaluation Process Faculty member completes Parts I-II of Chairperson Evaluation of Faculty Performance form. Submits it to chair no later than April 15. Timeline Tenured faculty whose last names begin with the letters A-M Spring of odd-numbered years Letters N-Z shall be evaluated in the Spring of even-numbered years.

Faculty Rights/Responsibilities To prepare the report of his/her activities To be consulted by the chairperson before the chairperson completes Parts III-VIII. To comment verbally and/or in writing upon the chairperson’s evaluation To receive a copy of the evaluation

Chairperson’s Duties Review the faculty member’s Official Personnel File before performing the evaluation. Consult with the chairperson(s) of the academic department(s) in which the faculty member is cross-appointed before performing the evaluation.

Faculty on Leave Evaluation may occur one (1) year earlier or one (1) year later However, faculty member must provide written request for such a change to chair by January 1 of the scheduled evaluation. In no case shall number of years of paid university-related service evaluated exceed two for non-tenured, three for tenured faculty below full Professor and five for tenured full Professors.

In-class Observations of Teaching Faculty shall be consulted regarding any in-class observation by the chairperson Chair must give notice at least two weeks before the visit Faculty member and chairperson shall jointly determine the specific course and date of the visit

Rules for In-class Observation In no case shall a chairperson conduct an in-class observation of teaching more than twice per evaluation period Administration provides training for in-class observations No in-class observation shall be conducted by any chair who has not completed training Following in-class observation, the chairperson shall meet with the faculty member to discuss the observation.

Faculty Instructions Faculty submits completed Parts I and II to chair by April 15 Chair returns completed (Parts III-VIII) for faculty review/comments Faculty member Reviews chair’s evaluation (Parts III-VIII) Completes Part IX Enters Comments Sign/Date

Chair’s Instructions Remind Faculty that the have the right to consult with you Review Official Personnel File Complete Parts III-VIII Document strengths/weaknesses Print/Sign/Date Return to faculty member Faculty Returns Sign/Date Forward to Dean by end of May.
