2 Overview The Libraries’ FY 2014/2015 collections budget remains consistent with the FY 2013/2014 base budget of $10,016,731. However, with a flat collections budget, we must make a 5.5% cut the budget due to the lack of funds to support inflationary costs for journals and databases. The Libraries proposes to handle this year’s lack of inflationary offset funds by cancelling approximately 615 journals and 30 database subscriptions, reducing firm order and approval allocations, and leveraging purchased e-book packages and demand-driven strategies to supplement acquisitions. The Libraries will use endowment funds to ensure that core and research intensive book materials will be acquired throughout the fiscal year. The reduced firm order and approval allocations will focus on requested items, demand-driven programs, the textbook lending program, and materials to support the largest Ph. D. programs. Despite the reduced spending power of the budget, the Libraries proposes to allocate a sum of $10,000 for additional journal subscriptions. These funds will be targeted to support new and expanding disciplinary programs across the university, with a particular focus on the cluster disciplines articulated in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program. The Libraries will continue our intensive data analysis and community input efforts to ensure that we provide maximum value in support of teaching and research. Moving forward, sustained increases to the continuing base collections budget will be critical if we are to manage inflationary cost increases (5-7% for journals and databases, and 3-5% for books) while sustaining resources to support growing research programs and faculty hiring.
