Lesson 6: Converting Fractions, Decimals, & Percent Period Odds: 10/8/15 Period Evens: 10/9/15

Lesson Objectives: ▪Objective 1: SWBAT convert fractions to decimals. _____ ▪Objective 2: SWBAT convert fractions to percent using multiple methods. _____ ▪Objective 3: SWBAT convert percent to decimals and fractions. ______

Why does these objectives matter? Think-Pair-Share: How will these learning objectives help you with your success in this class or in other areas? Be specific!

Fractions to Decimals (Objective 1): SWBAT convert fractions to decimals To change a fraction into a decimal, we must divide the fraction. Example 1: What decimal is the same as 3/8? Helpful Hint: “Top dog gets the house”

Whiteboard CFU What decimal is equal to 5/7? Round to the nearest hundredths place.

Fist to 5: Check for Understanding On a scale of 0-5: ▪5= Currently a master at this objective ▪0= I don’t even know where to start ▪Any number in between Rate your current level of understanding of Objective 1 on the line next to your written objective on the first page of your notes.

Fractions to Percent (Objective 2) : SWBAT convert fractions to percent using multiple methods : We can convert fractions into percent using two methods. Select the method that is most comfortable for you! But you need to be familiar with both!

Method 1 ▪Convert fraction to a decimal ▪MULTIPLY that decimal by 100, which means you MOVE the decimal over two spaces to the right.

Example: 2 = 7 Decimal to Percent=

Method 2 Example: Convert 4/5 into a percent. Step 1: Set the fraction equal to “x over 100” Step 2: Cross-multiply the proportion, then solve for x. Whatever x equals will be your percent.

Whiteboard CFU: 1.Change 8/15 into a percent. Round to the nearest whole number. (choose either method 1 or method 2)

Whiteboard CFU Change 17/50 into a percent (use different method then the one used before)

Fist to 5: Check for Understanding On a scale of 0-5: ▪5= Currently a master at this objective ▪0= I don’t even know where to start ▪Any number in between Rate your current level of understanding of Objective 2 on the line next to your written objective on the first page of your notes.

Percent to Decimals and Fractions (Objective 3): SWBAT convert percent to decimals and fractions Example: Convert 45% into a fraction and a decimal. Simplify fraction. PercentFractionDecimal

Whiteboard CFU Convert 325% into a FRACTION and DECIMAL PercentFractionDecimal

Whiteboard CFU ▪Convert 36% into a FRACTION and DECIMAL PercentFractionDecimal

Fist to 5: Check for Understanding On a scale of 0-5: ▪5= Currently a master at this objective ▪0= I don’t even know where to start ▪Any number in between Rate your current level of understanding of Objective 3 on the line next to your written objective on the first page of your notes.

Collaborative Groups: ▪Team Captain (2) ▪CFU Leader ▪Materials Manager How will you effectively and fully execute your role during your collaborative group time?

Tasks: 1)Team Captain- Go over “Criteria for Success” with group. 2)Materials Manager- “Group Practice” for Group. 3)Complete EVENS together…leave no man or woman behind. If done early, work on ODDS. 4)CFU Leader- Compare answers to answer key and troubleshoot wrong answers. 5)Individually- Complete “Formative Assessment/Reflection” 6)Begin Independent Practice.

Lesson 6: Formative Quiz/Reflection 1)Write to an absent student and explain to them how to complete the following. Be clear in the steps and provide an example to help in your explanations: a) convert fractions to decimals b) convert fractions to percent using method 1 and method 2. c) convert percent to decimals and fractions. 2) Reflection: a) What did we learn today ? b) So What ? (relevancy, importance, usefulness) c) Now What? (how does this fit into what we are learning, does it affect our thinking, can we predict where we are going) d) Questions I still have are…(provide at least one question of what will help you master the objectives).
