Dogberry is an archetype for bumbling police officers in modern film and television comedies. Among movie and TV policemen who followed in his footsteps are Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Smoky and the Bandit), Inspector Clouseau, the Pink Panther, and Maxwell SmartGet Smart, and Barny Fife. However, Dogberry gets laughs mostly for verbal faux pas–in particular, malapropisms–rather than for slapstick. malapropisms
